Continuous inkjet: How it works

The functionality of a continuous inkjet printer is based on a continuous ink jet or ink flow - hence the name. It works by continuously pumping ink through a nozzle and breaking it down into tiny, uniform drops using a piezo element or ultrasonic vibrations. These droplets are then electrically charged by a charging electrode and precisely directed onto the print material using deflection electrodes. The droplets reach a speed of 70 to 90 km/h. The diagram shows the individual components of the printing system and how they interact with each other.

  • 1 An ink jet emerges from the print head via a nozzle.
  • 2 This jet is modulated via a piezoelectric transducer so that a uniform break-off into individual droplets is achieved.
  • 3 The droplets formed in this way are built up and stabilized via a charging electrode.
  • 4 The negatively charged droplets are attracted by the positive deflection electrode and land on the product to be printed.
  • 5 The uncharged droplets are returned to the system via the drain channel.
  • 6 The height of the printed image is influenced by the distance to the product.
  • 7 The print image length is influenced by the longitudinal movement of the product.

  • Pressure regulator: The pressure regulator ensures that the ink is pumped out of the tank at the correct pressure.
  • Ink feed pump: This pump transports the ink from the supply tank to the nozzle.
  • Solenoid valve: This valve controls the flow of ink between the main ink tank and the mixing tank.
  • Ink storage tank: This is where the ink is stored.
  • Mixing tank/main ink tank: Ink and solvent are mixed in this tank to obtain the correct ink consistency.
  • Solvent storage tank: The solvent used to dilute the ink is stored here.
  • Feed pump: This pump transports the solvent from the tank to the mixing tank.
  • Return pump: The return pump returns unused ink to the system.
  • Ultrasonic vibration: This vibration breaks up the continuous stream of ink into tiny drops.
  • Piezo element: This element controls the formation of the ink droplets.
  • Nozzle: The ink is ejected through this small opening.
  • Charging electrode: This electrode charges the ink droplets electrically.
  • Deflection electrodes: These electrodes deflect the charged ink droplets to print the desired pattern.
  • Drain channel/return: The drops that are not used for printing are collected and returned here.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION EXAMPLES

The following application examples illustrate the relevance of contactless printing technology in industrial processes. Continuous inkjet is used when barcodes, 2D codes, OCR, best-before dates, batch numbers and consumer information need to be automatically applied to packaging or other products.

The continuous inkjet (printing) process guarantees a high-quality print image on the substrate. Products and packaging to be printed can be made of almost any material. For example, paper, cardboard, foil, glass, plastic or metal.
