What exactly is continuous inkjet printing?

The term continuous inkjet describes a modern printing technique in which there is no direct contact with the printing surface. Rather, the materials to be printed are fed past the print head of the CIJ printer on the production line. The print image is now created by the targeted firing and deflection of tiny ink droplets based on physical processes.

How does a continuous inkjet printer work?

The continuous inkjet (printing) process can be outlined as follows: First, a continuous ink jet is passed at high pressure through the printer's micrometer-fine print nozzle. Inside the ink chamber installed there, the ink is electrically charged and then breaks up into tiny droplets. Before being discharged from the printhead, the charged droplets pass through an electrostatic field. Using this technology, continuous inkjet printers are able to precisely determine the speed and charge - and thus the desired position - of the ink droplets. The mode of operation outlined is very efficient, unused printing ink is returned or collected, thus eliminating material waste.

What are the advantages of the CIJ process?

The basic advantages of the technology include high printing speed, flexible commercial applications, a favorable cost-benefit ratio, and non-contact marking. As a high-quality and precise technique, the process is used, for example, as a low-cost alternative to labeling.
