What is a thermal transfer printer?
Thermal transfer printers are printers that use ribbons and heat to transfer the ink to the medium. This creates a precise and consistent print image. The direct printers have been used successfully in many industrial productions for many years.
Our ALLEN XL5000 and ALLEN NGT series have proven themselves on the market and impress with their robustness and printing results - they offer incomparable quality.
Technology: How does a thermal transfer printer work?
In thermal transfer printing, the printers control the printing process using numerous small heating elements in the print head. The targeted heating of these thermal elements melts away parts of the ribbon at specific points, which adhere precisely to the materials to be printed on during the cooling process. This results in a clear, sharp print image with a long shelf life, as required in product marking, for example.
Thermal transfer printers in the industry
Direct printing using thermal transfer ribbon is often used in areas such as shipping, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and retail. In industry, the process is used for film, bag and sack labeling, for example. The printers make it possible to print a large amount of information in razor-sharp detail on very small areas. This information can consist of small texts, but the application of a QR code is of course also possible without any problems. Logos, texts, barcodes and variable data such as best-before dates or batch numbers are further applications. Thermal transfer printers are also suitable for textiles. The following table provides an example of the extensive range of applications for our products.
Thermal transfer printers - application examples
| Bereich/Branche | Beispiele |
|---|---|
| Food labeling | Indication of ingredients on labels |
| Chemical industry | Labeling of chemical containers, warning signs, drum labels |
| Cosmetics industry/drugstore articles | Labeling of cosmetics packaging, drugstore articles, ingredient labels |
| Pharmaceutical industry | Labeling of pharmaceutical packaging, blisters, batch numbers |
Advantages of large character printers
Because thermal transfer printers are available with print heads of different sizes and very high resolution, their print quality is impressive. This means that even small results are not only very legible, but also sharp-edged and high-contrast. This useful feature is particularly relevant for the pharmaceutical industry. Technically, the resolution is specified in DPI (dots per inch); thermal transfer printers can achieve up to 650 DPI. For this reason, the printing of barcode labels is another main area of application. The use of a thermal transfer printer for labels prevents incorrect scans due to its high resolution.
Another advantage of the thermal transfer printer is its robustness. Because the label absorbs the color of the ribbon in thermal transfer printing, the prints are particularly durable. The resistance to heat, cold, light, moisture and abrasion can be optimized through the specific combination of ribbon and medium. This results in numerous possible applications, for example in the outdoor sector.
The technology is immediately ready for use and ensures a good, professional working speed overall.
The models are reliable and low-maintenance. Their short downtimes and comparatively low personnel requirements reduce costs. Both aspects contribute to an efficient, easily calculable printing process.
In summary, thermal transfer printers using foil ensure fast, high-quality, commercially viable and cost-effective printing.

Do you have further questions? You can find more details here.
Is a thermal transfer printer the right printing system for my application?
If you want to print on a smooth material such as packaging film, a label or paper, the prerequisites for using a thermal transfer printer are met.
The thermal transfer printer is suitable for printing fixed data such as logos, text and barcodes, but also for variable data such as best-before dates, batch numbers, barcodes or texts. The change of data can go as far as the individual printing of individual products with serialized data.
Examples are prints on packaging films or labels.
